Joined A Book Club

And this is the first book I had to read. Not something I'd normally pick up, but trying something new is the point of a book club, I guess. It was pretty good, actually. And, after reading it, I will definitely NEVER try crack. Not that I was likely to, anyway.
The club meets at Chapters the first Thursday of the month at 7pm. I actually used to interview the lady in charge every month. I always wanted to join, but 7 was too close to my bedtime. Now that I no longer have to go to work in the middle of the night, I can stay awake past 8:30pm.

My book club is planning on reading one of those "chick lit" books sometime - I can't imagine they will be any good. I still like book clubs though, how many are in yours?

I don't know. Next month will be my first meeting. I went to a reading by Beth Powning at Chapters a few weeks ago, and a few of the members were there. What kind of book club are you in?

I'm in a bit of a random book club. There are 2 profs, one fancy housewife, one cbc producer, and one director/ mom of four who brings her baby, and me so we're a bit of a mixed bag. We read Atwood's Oryx and Crake last time, next we're reading Zadie Smith's White Teeth (my suggestion). So far I love it. It's really informal and there ends up being a lot of giggling and wine drinking involved.

Is it just me, or are the readings at Chapters a bit sad? I find no one is ever interested in the authors and they end up aimlessly pacing around, which is really too bad.

I always feel very sorry for the authors at book signings where no one shows up. They're either sitting there smiling bravely, or trying to keep busy signing the big piles of books surrounding them. The Beth Powning one was great, though. A fair number of people showed up, and they were all big fans, so I didn't have to feel sorry for her at all.
