I Can't Believe We Did This

Or that Peter did this.
Have you ever heard that if you put a few Mentos in a bottle of Diet Pepsi, it'll create a geyser?
Peter just had to try it last night in the driveway.
While it didn't create the 15-foot carbonated fountain he expected, it did shoot out a few feet. I was impressed.
Luckily it's raining now, so the sticky mess all over the driveway is being washed away.

I had never heard of this. I may have to try it. Or tell my kids to do it, then I won't be the crazy lady. (It may be too late.)
What's the gear coming out of the bottle?

I watched David Letterman do it on his show about a month or so ago. Peter you have to add like 3 or so in it to get it high. It was funny than all get out watching it!! My son and daughter want to try it!!

Was your son there? If he was I'll bet he was really impressed. We'll have to try this for sure, when the grandkids come.

We actually added ALL of the mentos.

The problem was that the cap was off for a little too long or that it was diet pepsi instead of diet coke or that it was at room temperature.

We will try this again.

(The boy was still impressed)

Ok...I need to know how to do this.
Cold Diet Coke
a whole pack of mentos
Put the lid on?

And I'm not going to wait for kids. I'm putting it on my yucky neighbors lawn in the middle of the night. How much running time do I have? Seriously.

Peter made some contraption with a screw and a metal tube with holes in it. He was very into it.

I'm just guessing about the temperature of it.

Simplest way is to just open the bottle and immediately drop as many mentos in as you can and stand back. Don't put the cap back on.

I copied an aluminum tube I saw on the web that you tape to the opening that allows you to release the whole pack of mentos into it at once. The time taken to tape it on probably let too much gas escape.

(yup, I was "very into it")

Oh man, that sounds like fun. I did see a video clip on Youtube.com I think they have it rigged up so they just have to let a string go to drop the Mentos into the diet Coke. The smaller the whole, the higher it goes. I have wanted to try it but with my luck it would fall over and soak me.
